Featuring six colors fundamental to perception, the Spectrum works explore how our minds construct the visual world. In his work, Jonathan Prince explores the internal cerebral experience.

“Our world is a black box until our brain, using the eyes as sensors, puts together what we see. That is not the ‘real’ world. It is a construction that we create.” - Jonathan Prince

Spectrum is an exploration of this concept via Zdeněk Lhotský's alchemical approach to glass. The medium’s transparency and malleability become metaphors for the balance between clarity and distortion that define our cognitive processes. His Lhotský Studio holds the distinction of being the world's oldest studio dedicated to cast glass sculpture. This legacy brings a rich history and expertise to their craft, contributing to the uniqueness of the Spectrum works.

The LOVE Cube is a collaboration with the grantLOVE project, a philanthropic art project founded by Los Angeles- and-Berlin-based artist Alexandra Grant.  The cube features Grant’s iconic LOVE symbol etched in violet glass, a color that represents the highest vibration. Proceeds from its sale will benefit the San Francisco Arts Education Project and Long Meadow Artist Residency.  "The collaboration between Jonathan Prince, Zdeněk Lhotský and the grantLOVE project on the LOVE Cube is a physical embodiment of artists working to show LOVE and support younger artists served by both the efforts of the SF Arts Education Project and Long Meadow Arts Residency. The LOVE Cube is a form of artist alchemy,” says Grant.

Lhotský’s translation of Prince’s metaphysical inspiration to the visual and tactile medium of cast glass, delves into the relationship between the tangible and the perceived. Just as glass alters the trajectory and qualities of light, the brain interprets and shapes the raw sensory data it receives to form our individual realities. In embodying this process, each unique Spectrum cube invites the observer to understand the world not as a fixed entity, but as a dynamic interplay of perception and cognition.

  • Immanence Embodied

    Jonathan Prince x Joep Beving
  • Berkshire House hosted Immanence Embodied, a collaboration between Jonathan Prince and Joep Beving. Inspired by the mental experience of flow state, the artists entered a space of mutual inspiration to create a sonic-visual experience. The Flow State sculpture naturally resonates in B flat, found by NASA to be the sound of the universe. By placing an audio transducer in the sculpture, we were able to resonate the new composition by Beving through the sculpture, creating a new and unique sound and giving the sculpture vibrational wings.
  • THE CARLYLE, A ROSEWOOD HOTEL, FALL 2023 - SPRING 2024

    THE CARLYLE, A ROSEWOOD HOTEL

    FALL 2023 - SPRING 2024

Reputedly named for British essayist Thomas Carlyle, the 35-story hotel, designed by the architectural firm of Bien & Prince, was completed in 1930. Despite the much-altered Manhattan skyline during the past 80 years, The Carlyle continues to dominate the Upper East Side over which it presides.

The Carlyle is a showcase of great art. Bemelmans Bar contains the only surviving public murals of artist/author Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of the famed Madeline children’s book series. Café Carlyle is highlighted by music-themed original murals created by French artist Marcel Vertès, who won two Academy Awards for the 1952 film, Moulin Rouge. The two Jan Weenix murals in the elevator lobby were originally a series of five paintings that were commissioned by a wealthy merchant from Amsterdam in the late 1600s. They were sold to newspaper publisher, William Randolph Hearst in 1923. The Carlyle has owned the two paintings since the early 1940s and they have been on display in the hotel ever since.

Two works by Jonathan Prince Studio will join this historic setting for a limited time starting in August, 2023.

  • JARTS, SECRETS OF THE TAROT

    JARTS, SECRETS OF THE TAROT

The oldest known version of the Tarot de Marseille, from 17th century France, the ancestor of the famous “Rider-Waite-Smith” Tarot, contains a hitherto unrecognized depiction of Hebrew letters, Judaic ritual objects, Torah stories, and Jewish holy days.

The hidden Judaica of the Tarot de Marseille suggests that it is an artefact of crypto-Judaism, a form of Judaism created by secret Jews who struggled to preserve their faith despite centuries of  persecution from the Vatican's Holy Office of the Inquisition.
Creative misunderstandings of the Tarot de Marseille's veiled Judaic content gave birth to the symbolic world of the Occult Tarot and Occult Kabbalah, which reinterpreted traditional Jewish symbols through an alternative prism of understanding entirely divorced from traditional Judaism.
The Secrets of the Tarot exhibit will publicly unveil the card's lost and forgotten secrets for the first time in 400 years.  Of course, indisputable proof regarding the intentions of the artists of the Tarot de Marseille are entirely lost to time.  Whether the exhibit is revealing history, or a creative invention, will ultimately be up to the exhibit visitors to decide for themselves…

Jonathan Prince Studio / Berkshire House is home to JPS Digital, the art and technology projects division of Jonathan Prince Studio.
Jewish Arts Collaborative (JArts) explores and celebrates the diverse world of Jewish art, culture, and creative expression.
