The Fragment series reflects Jonathan Prince’s sustained interest in the ways that broken or detached forms can act as cultural signifiers. A fragment is, by definition, a part of a larger whole, something separated, whether through time, force, or intention. Prince explores the reinterpretation of human-made objects, recognizing that such remnants often carry embedded narratives about the cultures that produced and used them.

Many of the sculptures evoke shapes that are immediately familiar, recalling tools, vessels, or architectural elements. Yet their precise functions remain elusive, suspended between recognition and mystery. At first glance, these works might appear to be portions of ancient artifacts, relics unearthed from an unspecified past. Closer examination, however, destabilizes this impression, raising more questions than answers.

Through Fragment, Prince examines the tension between form and interpretation, presence and absence. The series invites viewers to navigate the space between artifact and enigma, where meaning is neither fixed nor fully recoverable, but instead exists in a state of speculative engagement.
